Profit Is a System, Not a Surprise
Healthy margins don't show up by accident. They're the result of decisions made on purpose, across pricing, expenses, and operations.
A lot of owners treat profit like weather — something that happens to the business depending on the season. It's not. Profit is the output of a system you either built or didn't.
Three levers, in order
Profit comes down to three things you can actually control:
- Price — what you charge and whether you hold the line on it.
- Volume — how many people buy, and how efficiently you serve them.
- Cost — what it takes to deliver, and whether you've trimmed the waste.
Most owners reach for volume first. It's the most visible lever and the most expensive one to pull. The cheapest profit you'll ever find is usually in price and cost — the two you've been avoiding.
The expense you forgot to question
Every business carries expenses that started as a good idea and became a permanent fixture. The software no one uses. The subscription that auto-renewed. The vendor you never re-negotiated. A quarterly review of these is one of the highest-return hours you'll spend all year.
A system you don't review is a system that drifts.
Build the habit, not just the spreadsheet
You don't need a 40-tab financial model. You need a monthly rhythm:
- Look at the margin on your biggest offering.
- Find one expense to cut or renegotiate.
- Decide one price to test upward.
Do that twelve times a year and your business looks fundamentally different. Profit stops being a surprise and starts being a decision you made on purpose.
